Explore focused visual notes from systems work

Focused visual notes from experiments, media formats and production systems. Follow a guided path from first principles to the behavior that matters in production.

About this collection

Some engineering ideas do not fit neatly into a broad curriculum. They begin with a specific artifact, experiment or production behavior that becomes more useful when its moving parts are placed side by side. Field Notes is the collection for those focused investigations. Each guide starts from a concrete mechanism and builds only the context needed to understand what the evidence shows.

Begin with the Twitter timeline algorithm to see how candidate generation, ranking and filtering shape a production feed. Continue into MIDI to inspect a compact event-driven format or Slowrun to follow an experiment-stacking workflow. The subjects vary, but the editorial standard remains the same: keep the representation close to the underlying mechanism, name the important boundaries and avoid pretending that an observed implementation is a universal law. Use these notes when you want a concentrated technical tour that can support deeper reading or a practical investigation.
